Criteria | Jurisdiction

Do Legal Ecosystem Grants support organizations outside of New York?

At this time, the FurtherJustice Legal Accelerator Grant will only support organizations that have a significant presence in New York State.

See FAQ below for more on demonstrating a significant presence in New York State.

How can my organization demonstrate a "significant presence" in New York State, as specified in the selection criteria for a Legal Ecosystem Grant?

If your organization operates in New York State and serves primarily New York State residents, your organization has a significant presence in New York State.

If your organization works nationwide or supports additional regions in the country, a “significant presence” within New York State can be demonstrated by showing that New York residents make up a meaningful percentage of those you help. It can also be shown by the strength of your organization’s partnerships with other organizations based in New York State. For example, if your organization creates and disseminates Know Your Rights informational materials or training curricula on immigration law matters across the country and you have close partnerships with New York organizations that serve immigrants, then your organization would be eligible for a Legal Ecosystem Grant.

Criteria | Tax-Exempt Status (501(c)(3) Status)

Our organization is not a 501(c)(3). Are we eligible for a Legal Ecosystem Grant?

Yes, but only if your organization has a fiscal sponsor that has 501(c)(3) charitable status.

Our organization is a not a 501(c)(3), but we are fiscally sponsored by a 501(c)(3). Are we eligible for a Legal Ecosystem Grant?

Yes, your organization is eligible to apply for a Legal Ecosystem Grant.

We are a new organization that does not yet have a 501(c)(3) charitable status, but we have applied to the IRS for 501(c)(3) status and are waiting for a determination letter. Are we eligible for a Legal Ecosystem Grant?

Your organization will only be eligible to apply for a Legal Ecosystem Grant once it receives its exemption determination letter from the IRS, recognizing your organization’s tax-exempt charitable status, or if your organization is fiscally sponsored by an organization with 501(c)(3) charitable status.

Funding

What is the minimum and maximum grant amount that can be awarded to Legal Ecosystem Grantees?

FurtherJustice Legal Ecosystem Grants range from $5,000 to $30,000. Your organization does not need to request a specific grant amount in its Legal Ecosystem Grant application. The amount awarded to each organization will be at the discretion of FurtherJustice. We will consider a variety of factors, including: whether the organization is a new applicant or a previous Legal Ecosystem Grantee; the organization’s operating budget; and, the breadth of the organization’s capacity-building impact on the civil legal sector within its community.

When will the Legal Ecosystem Grants be disbursed?

2024 Legal Ecosystem Grants will be paid by June 15, 2024.

How many grantees will FurtherJustice select for Legal Ecosystem Grants?

FurtherJustice expects to award 15-20 Legal Ecosystem Grants in 2024.

What do Legal Ecosystem Grants have to be used for?
